We are now at the Matrea Merchantile Centre!

Check out these lovely photos that Gill, at Matrea Merchantile Centre, in beautiful downtown Duncan took today!  She did such a lovely job of the displays featuring Botanical Bebe and she did all this in very little time!!! I must say that the little dresses she added to the back wall are really precious... from a company called Silkberry Baby, done in the softest bamboo and the colours are luscious... if you are in Duncan you have to take the time to visit the boutique, it is part of the maternity centre, right beside the Red Balloon Toy Store! you can also check them out on facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/MatraeaMercantile?sk=wall&filter=2

The motifs they chose were Snails and Dragonflies, Dragonflies and Grasses, Spray Flowers in yellow and Hummingbirds.  In each motif all the items (2 different types of double layer blankets, receiving blanket, swaddling blanket and kimono) were printed at the same time so the dye lots are the same for each piece in each series!  They are also featuring the new Wet Bag, Change Pad and Wipes sets, in the Botanical Bebe leaf pattern in both black and green. The wet bags are lined with a lovely soft green (celery) waterproof PUL material... this is the same material that is used on the outside of cloth diapers and is also the middle layer in the change pads.

The blankets have two different types of backing... one a light fleece and one a super cuddly luxury fleece... both have to be felt to be appreciated!!

Make the trip and enjoy their exceptional boutique!

One of my Favourite Motifs....

I have been adding quite a few new products to the website and to my etsy store:
http://www.botanicalbebe.com/
http://www.etsy.com/shop/ecotextures

But I have to say I do have a special place in my heart for this one.... these are new pictures in the new format! I love columbines in all their wonderful combinations... I am working on doing a double for spring that is so unusual in it's shape you hardly know it is a Columbine... interestingly this flower is a favourite of my sister Pat's... she has quite a collection in her garden and Mom loved them too... nice connection.

Photo Happiness!

You may not know this but it has been my experience that Blankets are really, really challenging to photograph.. well my blankets are!  The reason is simple... They are printed with unique prints, not an all over pattern, or pattern only edges...where you can fold your lovely creations and take some very nice photos that way....and there are some really nice creative ways of doing these photos... but no, Botanical Bebe blankets need a different approach.

It isn't that I haven't been trying out different things along the way.. because I have... and Steph even did some great photos using the folded look... and they were beautiful....but I needed a way of showing the whole pattern.

Also in case you don't know, blankets do not love being hung by pins, on my design wall, even for a very short period of time.  It stresses the fabric and creates the most interesting (not!) folds and wrinkles that do nothing to show the blanket in it's lovely smoothness!!!

When we were at the show, "The Ladies" did a lot of re-organizing when things sold.  I took a photo of one of the last changes... and I don't know whose idea it was but I THANK YOU!!! The idea and photo gave me an ahh haa moment that I think will work perfectly for those blankets of mine :)

From this........

to this........

I love it!!!  And you can see other new blankets, done like this on the website: http://www.botanicalbebe.com/

And Ha HA on me... while trying to show the pattern to best advantage, I forgot that the blankets should actually be folded the same amount if I want consistent photos!!  Good Grief... and that will be another blog shortly.

"Baby" naming contest... just for fun and silliness!

For the Baby Fair, I purchased a couple of baby dolls that I think are really quite cute and will work very well for display purposes at the show.... but right now they are simply known as Laughing Baby and Serious Baby... and really it would be much nicer for them to have real names... hence the Contest!!!   I've dressed them in our gender neutral dragonfly kimono sleepsacs, but really they could be either, one of each, two of the same.... and that's where you come in.  Please email me botanicalbebe@gmail.com with your suggested names for each of them, and any "supporting" information for your choices that you want to share.  I will post the best of the entries- without any identification if you prefer, as well as the winning entry on Thursday afternoon.  A short but fun contest... and yes, there is a prize for the winner... A Change Pad set: includes Change Pad, Zippered Wet Bag and three matching double-sided wash cloths.  Details can be seen on the website: http://www.botanicalbebe.com/  Photos of the prize and the "babies" follow!

The Prize: Changing Pad Set, includes Changing Pad, Zipperd Wet Bag and 3 Matching double sided facecloths, a $44 value, and I'll sent it to the winner with free shipping included!

All zipped up....

What's inside!

All laid out for you to see....

A hilarious end to the 'Husky' STORY....

The Tale of What Happened to my Elderly Husky, the much loved older sewing machine in my textile life....

Sigh, it is my sadness to have to report that I DID indeed receive that dreaded service call.  Barry was very kind as he imparted the news that there was absolutely no hope for the dear old Husky... that he had spent hours trying to revive her, but to no avail.  He did offer to drop off the "carcass" by which I am sure he meant the final remains of the recently deceased... really, I am sure he did!  But I WAS BRAVE, took a deep breath, and said no, that was very kind but really she should just go directly to the great sewing machine heaven in the sky (or words to that effect!) Barry then, again so kindly told me he would plunder the remains before he threw it (her) in the dumpster, which I am sure he meant that he would harvest the parts to help give new life to other old Huskys who could be revived with a much needed transplant.... really, I am sure he did!

So I thanked him very much for trying so hard with dear sweet Husky and hung up the phone... sigh.

After supper I am just getting ready to do some more printing when my intercom rings... hmm who could that be? It's Barry... and he tells me he has something for me.  So thinking that he has, for whatever reason, decided to return dearly departed old Husky I meet him in the lobby...

He is turned away from me when I get off the elevator and when he turns around he does NOT have a machine in his hands but a lovely bouquet of flowers!!!!  He so very formally presents them to me as my condolence bouquet of flowers!!!!! in memory of the dearly departed!  I cannot begin to tell you how hard I laughed. OMG never in a hundred years could I have seen this one coming! It really was the most perfect humourous end to our fun conversation over what could not be done for my old machine.  The man has a truly wonderful, and wicked sense of humour! !

And here they are:

As I said, absolutely gorgeous!!!!! What a Hoot!

THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!!!

This Post is a true joy to write.... Vancouver Islanders, especially you in Victoria, take notes! and for all you others, this is a story to remember both as a business owner and a consumer.

So first The Challenge:
The move to our new studio space also brought up the need for some faster and more modern machinery, especially in the Serger department.  But living in a smallish city on Vancouver Island, there are no stores here that sell sergers... hmmm so being an ex-Victorian I call the place most Victorians call first for sewing machines.

The Challenge for the first store contacted:
First, I need to purchase 3 new machines and I need to have them shipped to me... so can you do this?  No, we are "not allowed" to take orders over the phone or to ship.  Really???  Furthermore she explains that the store took a hit on someone ordering machines with a credit card.... hmmm isn't that why the credit card companies have authorization numbers???  So, I am not pleased as taking the time to drive down to Victoria just consumes time, that quite frankly I don't have right now.  But, while I have her on the phone, I ask her to quote me some recommended models and the prices for same.  She did listen to what I wanted... but I don't think she heard me at all... bottom line was I needed faster machines that were "heavy duty" but not industrial... and what I got back from her was an immediate quote on 2 very high end machines that use air to thread... no doubt lovely machines but not anything to do with what I needed and the coverstitch would have to be specially ordered. And she tried to talk me out of the coverstitch machine!!!  Good grief. Odd she didn't realize that in running a design studio, that specializes in sewn products that I probably had a pretty good idea of what was out there, just not the specifics on what they carried.  Hmmm, no shipping, no phone order and the highest quote on inappropriate machines.... time to move on.

The challenge for the second store contacted:
To at least meet some of my needs.... how quickly bad customer service deflates eh? I decided that I would check out the one place here that does sell sewing machines, not sergers though and revived my "want list" when I called the Cloth Castle in Victoria:
http://www.clothcastle.com
and my first query question was.... I live in Duncan, I need two machines and I need them shipped.  Without a moment's hesitation, Barry informed me that he quite often drives up Island and could drop them off.  Problem solved!!.  Move on to the really fun stuff.... talking machines....
I need a serger and a coverstitch machine.  Both need to be fast and can handle heavy duty use.  Again without hesitation he directed me to their website, recommended 2 machines for me to look at and then gave me the prices for both... extra joy to me, and completely unlooked for, both were on Sale!  I looked at both, was very impressed.  Called him back, asked a couple of questions and the deal was sealed. Problem solved!!
All of this took hardly any of my time.... did I mention I don't have much of this right now ??  Barry was going to a family function up Island and would drop the machines off on his way up, on Friday.  Perfect. I chose exactly what he recommended the s15 and the s25....
http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/ca/en/421.htm

Friday arrives and in the pm so do my machines... Yahoo!  I immediately open the boxes and take out the instruction booklets before doing anything else.  Oh no... one of the machines is the wrong machine in the right box.... oh bummer. So on to the phone I go, knowing that Barry is up Island but wanting to leave a message at the store for when he arrives.  So, when I phone the store I get Brian.... I explain the problem and he is so nicely understanding and then asks if he can put me on hold.  Unknown to me, he has called Barry, explained the problem.  Brian has both of us on the phone, and assures me that a) Barry is not happy that this mix-up has occurred, b) the right machine is in the store, that the factory has made this boo-boo but unfortunately Barry won't be going back up Island for a couple of weeks, and c) but will come and pick-up the machine I have on his way back.  While we are having this discussion, I can hear I voice in the background to where Brian is... he then relays to me that Vandy (an obsiously lovely woman who works there :)  is going up Island on Tuesday and could drop off the new right machine then!! Problem solved!!

She did.  A delightful woman.... and her husband even offered to take the machine upstairs for me!  Both my machines are perfect and perfectly suited to what I need.

I have to tell you all that this experience and my interactions with all these wonderful Cloth Castle people made my day, my week, my month!!  Sure it is unfortunate that the one machine wasn't the one I wanted but it is always, always, always what is done with the problems (no avoiding 100% them, they do happen) that sets one company miles above any other.  As far as I am concerned, these people are quite simply THE BEST and I thank each and everyone of them for this incredible customer service.  I really, really do.

The Extras:
Barry took my most favourite old machine, that has been stuck in reverse forever and is truly optimistic on being able to breath life back into it.  I am so attached to this machine that it has come with me everywhere and when I was in Calgary I wanted to get it fixed (as it stalled while I was there) and seriously the one place just wanted me to buy a new one, a cheap new one, for about the price of the repair... and I am sorry but a cheap sewing machine wasn't going to replace the Husky that is as solid as a rock and extremely well made.  They didn't even attempt to get my machine repair business.  The second place I took it to, would look at the machine, and call me with an estimate... at least it was in the repair shop!  Alas, the repair man was nice, saying really the machine just needed a good cleaning, no new parts, but that it would take him.... 4-5 hours at   a rate that you associate with getting your car repaired.... and would I like to consider buying a new one.

Barry's response was, oh ya, I know the machine you are talking about and repairing sewing machines is what we do!.... sigh.  I definitely feel my old and dear machine is in good hands and if anyone can repair it, it will be them and that I will have a good running working machine returned to me.  Love, love it.  If for some reason, which I sincerely doubt, that it cannot be enlivened, I will know absolutely that everything that could be done, has been.  Did I say that I am really, really attached to this marvelous Husky???

I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed telling it :)  excellent stuff, eh?

New one layer, lightweight crib blanket/sheet coming very soon....

This slight change in line-up is purely customer driven!  I have had so many requests and orders for very light blankets, for people who live in the hotter areas of North America, that I have added these to our blanket product line... to be on the websites soon.

Single layer muslin blankets and blankets from our new ultra-light sheer muslin (all organic of course) are perfect for just a little cover without adding any heat.... thank you all for your great suggestions and requests!  Anytime you want to add a suggestion, please, please let me know... I love feedback :)

An example:
The hummingbirds featured below and on a previous post are done on the ultra-light sheer muslin, 28" x 36" vs. the swaddling blanket size at 40"x40"

Hummingbirds at last...

This little swaddling blanket didn't make it onto any of the websites, as it was part of a custom order I just did and that they finally received.... the postal strike, in Canada, certainly made for some interesting order fulfillment issues... boo!  And from what Jen said, she is very happy with her order for her "coming soon" bebe :) Below the hummingbird shots are a couple of the Bluebirds in a Sweetheart tress done in greens rather than blues as originally done.  I won't be doing anymore of this particular motif, but will have a slightly different version coming soon..... the photos are very light as both were printed on the Ultra-lightweight sheer muslin and I should have used a darker background for them... but hopefully you can still make out the details... the hummingbirds turned out really well and I am so pleased with the motif... just not thrilled with my abilities as a photographer!!
